How an Apparel Chain Simplified Promotions Across 850 Stores and Reduced Monthly Promotions Incidents by Half

Background + Business Challenge

“We had separate systems for store promotions and e-commerce incentives. There was no synergy. We then put in XCCommerce in all of the stores, and it helped us develop one process, one overall promotions team, and one set of best practices with promotions. It unified and simplified our process; that was the differentiator.”

Bineet Basant, Vice President Selling Systems, Maurice’s

The women’s apparel retailer operates stores in mid-market and small towns, and Basant joined just as the company added Oracle’s Xstore POS platform to its stores. Basant elected to move on from the Xstore cloud-based promotions engine and add the XCCommerce promotions engine directly to registers.

“We went through many steps to showcase to stakeholders that the XCCommerce solution would not add overhead to the system,” he said.

A key win, with stores being in rural locations, was the ability for the promotions engine to continue working in offline mode when the store web network was down or unavailable. Going forward, Basant is evaluating a migration of its e-commerce platform toward Salesforce Commerce Cloud, but he will continue to use the XCCommerce promotions engine for its ability to unify and simplify promotions across channels.

Summary of Value Delivered

  • ChallengeSeparate store and e-commerce promotion systems created complexity, inconsistent execution, and unnecessary operational issues.
  • SolutionImplemented the XCCommerce promotions engine across 850+ stores and 1,700 registers, creating a single promotions framework.
  • ResultsMonthly store promotions incidents cut by 50% — and a flawless day-one rollout across 1,700 registers. Sales associates now see promotions execute automatically and focus on customers instead of deal math.

Two Promotion Strategies Become One

When Basant began digging into the company’s promotions process, he quickly saw an issue with how communications were being communicated.

“We had separate systems for store promotions and e-commerce incentives,” Basant said. “There was no synergy. We then put in XCCommerce in all of the stores, and it helped us develop one process, one overall promotions team, and one set of best practices with promotions. It unified and simplified our process; that was the differentiator.”

Previously, the siloed set up could lead to promotions being processed inaccurately. Basant said promotions are complex for all retailers. They begin with merchandising teams and flow to field operations teams, and it can be a bit like a game of telephone.

Stores receive a “sales direction,” a daily briefing on what offers are live and active for that store that day. But they’re complex. For instance, a store might receive a note that dresses are 20% off for loyalty members, with an in-store BOGO offer on top of select items. When promotions are running in silos, the information can get lost en route to the store, resulting in discounts being applied differently and eroding margin.

With one system in place for all promotions, incidents decrease. Overall, for promotions, monthly store incidents decreased by half.

“Today, we continue to create separate promotions for e-commerce and in-store, but it’s the same process, the same way to apply rules. XCCommerce has helped us to reduce the overall noise in the store,” Basant said.

The Day Nothing Went Wrong: A Promotions Transformation, One Year Later

The day after 1,700 registers at more than 850 locations for a North American apparel chain received XCCommerce’s promotions engine at checkout, there was a moment that Bineet Basant, who oversaw the implementation, will never forget. The CIO called and said there was not one incident or mishap with the promotions at the registers the entire day.

“That in itself was an award for me,” Basant said, who is officially the VP of digital e-commerce and store technologies at the company. He joined the company in November 2023 to modernize and stabilize their POS and promotions technologies. Today, it’s more than stable. It’s rock solid, and Basant’s now working toward launching a new website, mobile app, loyalty program, and improved digital promotions.

Basant can do this thanks to the role XCCommerce played in unifying and simplifying the promotions process. Bringing on XCCommerce was Basant’s first capital project when he joined, resulting in a direct letter from the CEO, writing that the implementation was one of the company’s most successful IT projects ever. Here’s a look at how XCCommerce assisted Basant as he worked to simplify the company’s promotions process.

What’s Next: A Focus on Loyalty

Up next, Basant is working on a revamped website, expecting to go live late summer 2026. After that, a new mobile app launches in the fall of 2026.

Basant said a major focus for the company is to present a digital experience and incentives that increase engagement with younger shoppers. A key to this engagement will be an enhanced loyalty program and developing personalized ways of reaching loyal shoppers.

With a stabilized store environment and a unified promotions plan in place for all channels, the company has built a solid foundation to work from. “Having one promotions engine allows us to see the complexity of promotions much better and develop offers that resonate with shoppers,” Basant said.
